NKDF Society chair Mike Robertson said, “This is an exciting project. The equipment purchase will make a variety of employment opportunities possible for Haisla workers.”
“This funding is nothing but good news for the community,” said Bulkley Valley-Stikine MLA Dennis MacKAY. “Not only will it create jobs but it will help to reach our government’s goal of leading the world in sustainable environmental management.”
Colleen Nyce, Manager Corporate Affairs and Community Relations for Alcan in northern British Columbia, and member of the board of the NKDFS says, "I am thrilled that the NKDF is able to assist the Haisla to achieve this longstanding goal. This is the type of community development and economic project that Alcan had in mind when it helped established the perpetual fund in 1999."
Keith Nyce, Executive Director of Kitamaat Village Council says, “The Haisla are very excited that the purchase of a new boat for the Haisla Fisheries department can now proceed, it has been a long process in identifying one that will fill the needs of the Community. We look forward to working with the various funding agencies and are appreciative of the grant from the NKDF, who we have a good working relationship with. They have been instrumental in assisting our efforts not only in economic development but in such initiatives as the renovation of our Recreation Center which also serves as the cultural hub of our Community,”
The Nechako-Kitamaat Development Fund Society was jointly established in 1997 with a combined contribution of $15 million by the government of British Columbia and Alcan Inc. The Fund’s investment area includes lands impacted by the original Kemano project and focuses on those communities in the Nechako and Haisla regions of the north.
The Society encourages applications from local governments and legally incorporated non-profit organizations. NKDF invests in projects that create sustainable employment, diversify the economy, and improve the basic infrastructure needed for community stability, quality of life and growth.
