NKDF Society Approves Two New Grants in the Nechako Area
APR 24, 2002

The Nechako-Kitamaat Development Fund Society is pleased to announce approval of funding for community economic development projects in Vanderhoof and the Southside.

At its March 27th Board meeting, the Board approved grants totaling approximately $240,000 for projects designed to improve economic opportunity for the participating communities.

  • The District of Vanderhoof has been approved for funding of $77,000 for the Riverside Park Lighting project, matched by funds from the Rotary Club, the Nechako Valley Credit Union, and the District of Vanderhoof.  Directors also issued a second $125,000 cheque for the ongoing Downtown Revitalization project.
  • The Burns Lake Native Development Corporation (BLNDC) also received conditional approval for an entrepreneurial training program to be delivered on the south side of Francois Lake.  Directors offered up to $38,000 of funding to this project, conditional on the BLNDC obtaining matching funds and enrolling a minimum number of qualified participants from the Southbank and Grassy Plains area.

Society activities and programs are supported through the Northern Development Fund, jointly established by the government of British Columbia and Alcan. The investment area for the NKDF includes all communities affected by Alcan’s Kitimat-Kemano hydro-electric project.

Dave Merz, Chair of the Society, is happy to announce that the business plan for the new fiscal year (starting April 1, 2002) includes another $1 million for new grants and $330,000 for loans.
