Funding Approved for Kitamaat Village Development
MAR 29, 2000

As the first fiscal year of the Nechako-Kitamaat Development Fund Society (incorporated in August 1999) winds up, the Board has announced its most recent grant project approval.

At their March 21, 2000 meeting the Society approved a Community Grant proposal that sees the lesser of 50% or $145,500 going to Kitamaat Village Council for the detailed design of Wathl Creek Commercial Area. This is one phase of a long-term project to develop a commercial sector in the community. The project has long been identified as a community priority.

Dave Merz, Society Chair, sums up the first seven months of operations by saying, "we have been pleased with the response to our grant programs to date. Our Board has received and reviewed a number of positive proposals and we have provided funding to five different community projects so far."

These projects are:

  • 2 proposal-writing workshops in Vanderhoof
  • a regional tourism conference in Vanderhoof, for the Stuart-Nechako and Lakes District region
  • construction of a well at Wistaria hall on South Side
  • Wood Forum 2000 in Vanderhoof
  • detailed design of Wathl Creek Commercial area in Kitamaat Village.

Other highlights of August 1999-March 2000 operations include the completion of a Policies and Procedures Manual for the Society and the distribution of full grant program information in the Society’s investment area. Manager, Fiona Glass, adds " we are now in the position of looking ahead to the new fiscal knowing that a strong foundation is in place for the Society."

The Nechako-Kitamaat Development Fund Society provides grants to legal organizations for projects which improve the basic facilities, equipment, services or installations needed for growth, jobs, community stability and quality of life; or for projects which improve capacity to generate economic development. Funding for the grant programs is taken from the Northern Development Fund, the administration of which is overseen by the Ministry of Energy & Mines. The Fund was created as a result of the BC-Alcan 1997 Agreement.
