Local Interest in New Development Fund Spreads
OCT 26, 1999

Nearly 60 people turned out in the last 2 weeks to hear more about the Nechako-Kitamaat Development Fund Society and its new grant programs.

At a series of 4 community workshops in Kitamaat Village, Grassy Plains, Fort Fraser and Vanderhoof, local residents had the opportunity to hear more about the Society and its programs as well as to ask questions and bring forward suggestions.

According to Fiona Glass, Society Manager and Workshop Facilitator, "at all 4 workshops we had good interaction, and lots of important questions were raised."

Packages containing full program descriptions and application kits were distributed at the community workshops. The package contains details of the 2 grant programs which were announced earlier this month.

Community Grants are available for projects which improve the basic facilities, equipment, services or installations needed for growth, jobs, community stability and quality of life. Projects must demonstrate economic or social benefits to a community(s) in the Fund area (the Nechako Region and lands traditionally used by the Haisla people).

Projects may include telecommunications, transportation, water, hydro and sewer, recreational infrastructure, beautification, and community services.

Economic Development Capacity Grants must be used to develop community and regional capacity to generate economic development. Eligible activities include workshops, seminars and other activities (e.g. feasibility studies) in communities to develop business management skills, enterprise facilitation or economic development skills, where economic or social benefits to the Nechako Region or Kitamaat Village can be demonstrated.

Either grant may fund community projects proposed by a legal organization or local government from Northwestern BC.

Glass adds " from what I saw in each community, there is no shortage of good use these funds could be put to. I expect that work will begin on a number of proposals right away."

Proposals will be evaluated by the Society Board based on individual merit. More information on the application procedure and program details can be obtained by calling the Society’s toll free line (1 877 478 FUND – 3863).

Well, this success story throws back a little bit. We started planning for the expansion at the Burns Lake Public Library in the early 2000's. It was an ambitious project - double the size of the library!! The board...
