NKDF grants $88,066.00 for New Projects in Vanderhoof, Burns Lake and Southside

 At the March 14^th, 2017 meeting of the Nechako-Kitamaat Development Fund Society Board, Directors approved $88,066.00 in funding for three new projects.

The three new projects are:

• Rip’n the North Bike Club was granted $53,076.00 to develop 3 km of new bike trial and add a series of jumps to the bike park.
• Village of Burns Lake was approved funding in the amount of $21,000.00 to assist with investigating ways to diversify the local economy. This project will include community engagement as well as identifying innovative ways of attracting and retaining residents.
• An amount of $13,990.00 was awarded to Grassy Plains Community Hall Association to replace the roof and insulation at the Grassy Plains Community Hall.

Shirley Bond, Minister of Jobs, Tourism and Skills Training and Minister Responsible for Labour says, “I know that being able to maintain an active lifestyle is important to many of our residents. Adding bike trails and creating engaging activities will greatly benefit our community members and the tourists that come to visit.”

Gareth Manderson, General Manager Rio Tinto BC Works says, “Rio Tinto recognizes the effort community organizations put into their grass roots projects including the many volunteer hours it takes to make these possible. Rio Tinto is pleased to be part of NKDF and supporting initiatives which benefit communities where we have operations.” 

Of these funding approvals John Rustad, MLA for Nechako Lakes says, “Investments in smaller communities like ours has a cascading effect, creating opportunities for community engagement, active living, and creating openings for economic growth. The $88,066.00 will go a long way to bolster the ongoing efforts of our hardworking community leaders.”

The Nechako-Kitamaat Development Fund Society was jointly established in 1997 with a combined contribution of $15 million by the government of British Columbia and the former Alcan Inc., now Rio Tinto. The Fund’s investment area includes lands impacted by the original Kemano project and focuses on the communities in the Ootsa, Lakes, Nechako and Haisla regions of the north.

The Society encourages applications from local governments and legally incorporated non-profit organizations. NKDF invests in projects that create sustainable employment, diversify the economy, and improve the basic infrastructure needed for community stability, quality of life and growth.
